Stepping into the ocean: Things i’ve found helpful
I titled this Stepping Into the Ocean, because that’s what this process has felt like. Some days that step has felt more like diving head first, but I wanted to share parts of my journey and some knowledge I didn’t have at the start. In the world of fashion, brands can stand out as a culture-defining entity. It's more than clothing; it's a reflection of lifestyle, art, music, and attitude. For those with a desire to design and a vision for style, starting a brand can be an exciting path. However, navigating the steps of this requires a combination of creativity, business acumen, and an understanding of the industry. Here's some insight in the steps Spiritual World Tour has taken. Not to say that it’s been perfected by any means, but some things to consider when starting.
1. Define Your Vision
Before you start, take time to define your brand's vision and identity. What sets your brand apart? Is it a focus on sustainability, graphics, minimalist designs, or a fusion of influences? Your brand's identity will be the cornerstone of your entire venture, influencing everything from designs to marketing strategies.
2. Research The Market
Understanding your market is essential. Dive into the world of fashion to grasp the trends, styles, and preferences of your potential buyers. Who are they? What brands do they currently love? Conduct surveys, analyze social media, and attend local events to gain insights. This will help you tailor your designs and brand message to who you’re targeting.
3. Be You
At the heart of any successful brand are its designs. Whether you're a graphic artist or collaborating/hiring one, focus on creating distinctive, eye-catching designs that resonate with your audience. From t-shirts to hoodies, each piece can tell a story and embody the spirit of your brand. But ultimately be you. What you have to say is different than anyone else.
4. Develop The Identity
Brand identity encompasses everything from logos to your packaging. Design a logo that is memorable and reflective of the brands personality. Consider the colors, font, and images that will represent your brand across all touch points, creating a cohesive and recognizable trademark.
5. Source Quality
The quality of your garment speaks for your brand. Research and source materials that align with your brand's ethos. Whether it's organic cotton for sustainability or premium fabrics for luxury appeal, prioritize quality without compromising on your brand's values. And be okay starting with the best you can find with the knowledge and resource you have at the moment. There’s always room to grow.
6. Find Reliable and Ethical Suppliers
Establishing relationships with suppliers is crucial for success. Look for manufacturers who can bring your designs to life with attention to detail and consistency. Request samples, assess their production processes, and make sure they can meet your quality standards and production timelines. It’s good to vet your manufactures. Depending on what you value, knowing the working conditions, wages, and employee experience can be necessary to who you partner with.
7. Plan Your Production
Once you've finalized designs and secured suppliers, it's time to plan your production process. Create a production timeline that considers design development, sampling, production runs, and delivery schedules. Factor in contingencies to avoid delays that could impact your release. I’ve found it best to over estimate this factor. Nothing is worse than waiting for product that could be stuck in customs or shipping when you’ve got a release deadline coming up. I’ve been there, and know the feeling of calling DHL or FedEx everyday.
8. Build Online
In today's market, a strong online presence is non-negotiable. Create a website that showcases your brand and products, making it easy for customers to browse and purchase. Leverage platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter to engage with your audience, share behind-the-scenes glimpses, and build anticipation for your launch.
9. Marketing and Promotion
Marketing is telling the brands story to the world. Develop a strategy that aligns with your brand and target audience. This could include influencer collabs, pop-up events, sponsored content, and storytelling through your brand's social media posts.
10. Launch with Purpose
As you approach your release date, build excitement through teasers and countdowns on social media. Consider hosting an event or pop-up shop to create some noise and give customers a tangible experience. Ensure your website is ready for an easy shopping experience, and be prepared to handle orders efficiently. Grabbing a label printer, boxes from ULine, and a couple friends to help is how Spiritual World Tour started. We’d have boxes lined up in our apartment picking and packing each one. As volume grows consider finding a third party fulfillment situation in your area.
11. Feedback is Vital
After the release, gather feedback from customers. Listen to critiques, comments, and sales data to understand what's working and where you can improve. Adapt and evolve your designs and strategies based on this input to keep your brand in a position to grow and adapt.
Starting a clothing brand is a journey that requires time, creativity, and an understanding of your audience. By laying a foundation with a clear vision, unique designs, quality production, and effective marketing, you can carve out your space in the world of fashion. So, take that leap, and let your creativity find your spot in the market.
